Frances Fitzgerald T.D., Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, was in St. Joseph’s College, Lucan today to officially launch a mental health awareness project developed by student Maeve DeSay, with support from Think Big.

Maeve’s project, entitled ‘Need a Hand’, saw her and members of the St. Joseph’s student council develop a hard plastic card with names and contact details of mental health organisations that they felt were relevant to young people.

Maeve explained: “The student council wanted to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues in our school and create a support system that encourages people to reach out to each other. We developed a card featuring the names and numbers of various mental health services that we felt would be helpful for any young person in distress. The outstretched hand on the card symbolises that help is always on hand. We also created bracelets featuring the same logo which were designed by my classmate Diane Meyler. To date the project has been a huge success and the positive change in the school atmosphere is amazing.”

Maeve received funding and support for her project from Think Big, a programme designed by O2 and Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health, to enable young people to do projects in their community that will make a difference to young people’s mental health.

Daryll Rowe, Community Manager at O2, tells us about his favourite entertainment apps.

You can’t have a smartphone without apps, whether it’s the iTunes Appstore, the Android Marketplace or the Windows Phone Marketplace. I own an iPhone and have done since the 2G iPhone so I have apps going back to 2007.

Here’s a list of some of my favourites for entertainment.

1. IMDB: The Wikipedia of movie trivia. This app takes the very popular website and puts its power in the palm of your hand. Every film fact you’d ever want to know is on this app, including cast lists; plot summaries and critical reviews from both professional and amateur critics. Personally I use this app when watching TV. I will say to myself “who is that guy and what have I seen him in” I then crack open the app and there is the answer. It will break up any fight and help with any table quiz movie round. You can even watch trailers for upcoming or just-released films if you get tired reading.

2. Netflix: Brand new to the Irish Market, the Netflix app for iPhone offers movies and TV shows on a subscription service starting at €7 per month. It’s even available over your 3G connection. It’s an ideal app for commuters or parents who want to keep their kids entertained on the go. One problem I have with it is that there isn’t as much content on here as I would have expected, however it is early days and more content will come in time no doubt.

3. Sky Go: This app allows you to access all of the Sky Go that you would on your PC. Amazing! Sometimes I find myself stuck in work on a Saturday or Sunday dying to watch a match as soon as lunchtime comes around I can fire up this app and watch any of the sport channels. Better yet Skys F1 channel is coming soon.

4. ZeeBox: I am new to this app and it does not work all that well in Ireland but when it does I am convinced it will be a winner. The best way I can descibe this app is to tell you how I use it. For example the other night I stuck on Top Gear and then launched the app. Instantly I had access to way more information about the program I was watching. It is like a mix of IMDB and the Sky guide. You can also link it up with your Social Media and speak with other people watching the same program. Key your eye on this one.

5. Instapaper: A simple-yet-genius iPhone app, Instapaper lets you save magazine, newspaper and blog pieces for reading later in the day. Best of all, the app syncs with your web account so no matter where you find your content, it’s all available in the app. Once you save a story to Instapaper, it downloads the text and only the text in an easy-to-read format that can be read even if your phone is offline. I will often load up a few articles ready to read later.

6. Pulse News: I have a number of news apps, Huff post, Journal.ie, The Guardian, Newstalk but I always find my way back to this one. Pulse takes all your favourite sites and transforms them into a mosaic style so that you can have a number of different stories at your fingertip. It is also fully compatible with twitter, facebook, evernote and instapaper.

7. Sky sports news: I am currently writing this on transfer deadline day and I have this app open next to me to catch all the deadline day new as it happens. I am lost without the news that this app provides from transfer news to latest scores to live TV and radio.

Tell us, what’s your favourite app?

We like to think that we have a smartphone to suit anyone who walks through our doors or checks out our website. To illustrate that point, we thought we’d look at the common requirements from customers and pick out some top notch handsets to suit.

So, which of these (if any) best reflects your personality?

For the adventurer in you

Recommended phone: Motorola DEFY+

If you like to do things a little bit differently, the Motorola DEFY+ will be like a breath of fresh air. It’s a smartphone that’s life proof. It’s one tough little cookie, it’s water and scratch resistant, dust proof and comes with all the good looks and functionality you’d expect from a Smartphone – perfect for those on an adventure.

It’s built on Android 2.3 with a 1Ghz processor, a 5MP camera and supports Adobe Flash player. And with a large display and access to thousands of apps – it’s boredom proof as well.

Audiophile

Recommended phone: HTC Sensation XE

Fancy screens and cutting edge operating systems are all very nice, but for some people all that matters is sound quality. If you use your phone for listening to music on the go as much as you do for communicating, then we would have to recommend the HTC Sensation XE.

It does everything you could want a modern smartphone to do, thanks to its dualcore processor, qHD screen and Android 2.3 OS. But beyond that it comes with Beats Audio technology, which introduces a special high-quality sound setting and a top quality set of ear buds.

Serial messager

Recommended phone: BlackBerry Bold 9900

Of course, for many people a smartphone’s main and possibly even sole task is text communication. If you find yourself sending email after email and text after text during your average day, then you should probably check out the BlackBerry Bold 9900.

It’s the latest and greatest in a long line of expert messaging devices from RIM – the company behind the BlackBerry brand. The Bold 9900 comes with arguably the finest physical qwerty keyboard in the business, which enables you to type far quicker and more accurately than on any touch-only device.

Size matters

Recommended phone: Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray

Mobile phones have become more powerful and more useful than ever. This is a good thing. For some, though, something fundamental has been lost in the mix – mobility. Phones have gotten a whole lot bigger.

Those looking for a device that can handle everything you’d expect from a modern smartphone but in a pocket-friendly package should give the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray a look. While it has a pin-sharp 3.3-inch touchscreen, a powerful 1GHz processor and the Android 2.3 OS, it’s just 111mm tall, 53mm wide and weighs in at a scant 100 grams.

Do you fit into any of these categories, or are you looking for something different from your smartphone? If so, let us know in the Comments section below and we’d be glad to follow up with some more recommendations.

Decisions, decisions… what will it be – Netbook or Tablet? Daryll Rowe, Community Manager at O2 and all round techie geek shares his knowledge to help you decide.

Netbook
One of the benefits of using a Netbook is the hardware included on the product. Netbooks come with full (ish) keyboards, a screen as large as a tablet and much higher screen resolution than you would find on any tablet. A physical keyboard is a desired feature for many individuals who do not like to type on a touchscreen, personally I cannot get used to typing on an iPad, I have the iPhone down but when it comes to an iPad I feel like I am using a fisher price toy and my words per minute are about 90% less than what they usually are. However, bigger may not always be better. Originally, netbooks were designed for portability. These devices accomplish work on the go but they can be a burden to carry with you when you add in the power cable. Most netbooks only weigh a couple of pounds, the Macbook Air is 2.38 lbs which isn’t very different when compared to the 1.33lbs an iPad 2 weighs.

The other benefit to netbooks is the fact that in a majority of cases they run a full OS that you would find on a desktop or laptop. Yes, tablets offer access to lots of apps, but netbooks pull ahead with the wealth of available productivity programs. Microsoft Office Starter Edition comes pre-loaded on many notebooks. Then there are free apps such as OpenOffice.org (which goes deeper than Office Starter) and Paint.NET for editing photos. And let’s not forget the desktop apps, such as Photoshop, that offer more precision and power than anything you’ll find on a tablet. Stand out performers in this space are the Macbook Air I mentioned above, expensive at €999 and the Asus Zenbook (2 weeks standby!).

Tablets
Led by Apple’s iPad 2, tablets are ideal for consuming content. They’re great tools for surfing the web, checking e-mail and Facebook, playing games, reading digital magazines and books, and enjoying movies and music. But that’s not all tablets have going for them.

These devices turn on instantly and tend to last longer on a charge than your typical netbook. The best models offer 8 or more hours of active use. That battery life advantage also extends to standby time. With tablets’ phone-like operating systems, you can set them aside for days and they will likely still have plenty of juice left.

The most popular tablet size is 9 to 10 inches, which is similar in dimensions to a magazine, but you’ll also find plenty of devices with 7- or 8-inch screens. These models are more portable, and can more easily fit inside a purse or jacket pocket. Regardless of the size, tablets are lighter and easier to carry than laptops.

The iPad 2 starts at €487, and there are several tablets that start as low as €199. I haven’t seen many quality devices at that lower price, but it looks like the $199 Amazon Kindle Fire changes that with a great screen, a turbo-charged browser, and easy access to Amazon content. Now I know there have been various issues with this device but I am sure these will be ironed out making it as popular as the Kindle.

As far as productivity goes, tablets are becoming increasingly versatile as more business-friendly apps proliferate. There’s the versatile iWork suite for the iPad, as well as robust third-party options such as Documents to Go and Quickoffice. Similar options are available for Android-based tablets. Thanks to such cloud-based services as Dropbox and iCloud, the limited storage capacity of tablets is less of an issue than you might think, though tablets are not very useful without Internet connectivity.

Verdict
A netbook is a great second computer to compliment your existing main computer. Netbooks are very portable but not as capable or powerful as laptops. Netbooks are ideal for surfing the web, lightweight gaming, and word processing. Tablets are just as or even more portable than netbooks. Tablets computers are perfect for media consumption. They’re ideal for music, watching videos, playing interactive games, e-book reading and browsing the web. They are not ideal for work related processes such as word processing or photo editing.

Recently I was in the market for something more portable, I decided to get a netbook over a tablet. Why? For my needs right now, that’s what I would buy, I wanted a secondary work device that I could just slip into a sleeve like and iPad but have the power of a laptop. Your needs may be different. I hope this has helped you make a decision on your next device be it a tablet or netbook

If you’re looking for a stunningly stylish smartphone that combines the rock-solid usability and market-leading features of a BlackBerry handset, with the great touchscreen usability of the best Android and iPhone devices, then the BlackBerry Curve 9380 exclusive from O2 is definitely the right device for you.

With its gorgeous 3.2-inch touchscreen, feature-packed specification and unbeatably intuitive interface, the BlackBerry Curve 9380 is one of the best smartphones you can currently buy and it’s from free with O2.

To celebrate the success of the BlackBerry Curve 9380 and to help you get a better idea of just what it can do for you, we’ve brought together some of the best review quotes we’ve seen so far. If one thing is for certain, the great BlackBerry Curve 9380 is yet another winner for the BlackBerry range.

CrackBerry
“…the BlackBerry Curve 9380 is positioned as RIM’s entry level touchscreen BlackBerry, [and] it delivers all of the experience of the bigger and better heeled BlackBerry Torch 9860…Final verdict? The BlackBerry Curve 9380 is by far the best touchscreen Curve to date!”

Recombu
“Given its price point we think that the BlackBerry Curve 9380 will do really well. It offers a similar level of functionality to the more expensive BlackBerry Torch 9860, but for a smaller price tag, bundling NFC capabilities in for good measure.”

TechRadar
“The BlackBerry Curve 9380 is gloriously comfortable…[and] the social networking integration is well thought out and appealing.”

MobileSyrup
“…RIM has built an excellent device, the Curve 9380 does everything right: it’s premium-feeling, fast and stable, with a nice big screen and sleek design.”

TheBerryFix
“..the Curve 9380 is most definitely a phone perfectly fit for those looking for a reliable BlackBerry experience at a cost that won’t break the bank.”

Tech2
“…right now, the Curve 9380 is the cheapest, totally touchscreen BlackBerry out there that [has] some pretty cool features to offer.”

There’s no doubt that the BlackBerry Curve 9380 is a fantastic smartphone for all requirements. You can pick up this gorgeous handset right now at our shop, so why not visit the O2 shop and find out just what it can do for you today.

One of our O2 Angels made two little Westlife fans very happy when she arranged for them to meet Westlife at the recent O2 SmartSounds gig.

The twins were hoping to meet their favourite band when they attended the Childline gig in The O2. Alas, their dream wasn’t to come true that night but our O2 Angel took their details and we were able to contact them to offer a meet & greet with Westlife at O2 Smartsounds just a few weeks later.

Kerrie and Mikie were delighted and sent in a lovely card to say thanks. We were chuffed to get it and wanted to say a big thanks right back. Not many of us have halos but we reckon smiles are the next best thing – and they certainly made us smile.

Thanks guys :)

Paul O’Connell was in O2 Customer Care, Limerick this week to mentor young people who are taking part in the nationwide Think Big programme.

Here’s what Paul had to say, “I really admire the young people involved in Think Big as they are being proactive about making a real difference in their local communities. The project ideas are fantastic and I was proud to be able to share my ideas with this group and hopefully help them to achieve their goals.”

It was a great evening. Paul loved the ideas for the Think Big projects, especially the one from Kings Island, Limerick who are opening up a youth cafe in the area. He has promised to pop in when it opens along with Keith Earls – so look out for them!

Click here to read more about the projects.

• King’s Island Drop in: Elaine Flynn from Kings Island in Limerick
• FML website: Robert Gould from Turners Cross
• Smiles all round: Josie McGrath Ryan from Mallow, Cork
• Happy thoughts for a day: Vikki Hutchinson from Birr, Co Offaly
• Footsy Friday: Jonathon Collins from Garryowen

Think Big has been designed by O2 and Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health, to help young people do projects in their community that will make a difference to theirs and to other’s mental health.

Since its launch in September 2010 Think Big has funded nearly 100 projects throughout the country and will be running more mentoring workshops over the next few months with rugby stars Brian O’Driscoll and Johnny Sexton.
