Guide to Mobile Roaming with O2
O2 mobile phone roaming is available on 400 networks in 200 destinations, allowing our customers to roam in nearly all destinations around the world - more than any other Irish Mobile network.
Mobile roaming with O2 is easy with this simple guide. Take a look at our roaming charges or get tips for internationally dialling.
Roaming Coverage & Charges
Whilst Ireland and most European countries have mature networks with near 100% population coverage, some developing countries and countries of vast geographical size can have limited coverage. Check in advance whether the area in the country that you are going to has coverage available.
Roaming
Services
O2's Basic Roaming Service:
- Make & receive calls
- Send & receive texts
O2's Enhanced Roaming Service:

Dialling your Voicemail or customer care
With mobile phone roaming, you can access your voicemail or call O2 customer care by using short codes.
Call your O2 Voicemail using 171
Call O2 Customer Care using 1909
O2's Roaming Tip:
Short codes aren't supported in some international roaming destinations. If they aren't working simply dial the International version:
For O2 Voicemail, dial the international code, the prefix, then "5", followed by your mobile number: +353 86 5 1234567
For O2 customer care, dial: +353 61 203501
All of the above calls will be rated as a call back to Ireland
Dialling
Internationally
Don't forget that when dialling internationally, you need to dial the international code of the country you're calling.
O2's Roaming Tip:
Enter '+', then the country code of the country you're trying to call.
Entering '00' doesn't always work, so stick to '+' and you'll be connected in an instant.
O2's Roaming Tip:
Update your phonebook to include the international dial format:
- Use +353
- Then drop the 0
- And each number should look like this: +353861234561

O2's Roaming Tip:
Short code, freecall & lo-call numbers like 11850 or 1850 can't be dialled from abroad. So, get the International dialling number before you go.
Dialling
Nationally
If you're travelling abroad and want to make a call within the country, dial the number as it is displayed locally. Don't forget to use the local area code and you can still use the international dial format if you want.
Remember:
Premium numbers and local short codes may not be supported.
Local freephone numbers are free, but only from a landline. If you use your Irish mobile, you will be charged the mobile roaming rate when dialling within the country.
Handsets & Different Networks
Different roaming destinations may require different handsets.
When roaming in Europe, single band and dual band handsets should connect to most networks. O2 Ireland handsets support both.
Tri-band handsets are required in the USA and quad band handsets are required in South America and Central America. For Japan and South Korea, the minimum required handsets are 3G.
O2's Roaming Tip:
Understand the frequency of the handset you have, and the type of handset that is required for your intended destination before you start roaming.
